Are you worried about 'Economy Class Syndrome'?

(DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis)

Recently there has been a lot of press coverage concerning the risks to airline passengers of DVT or ‘Economy Class Syndrome’. By being aware of this problem, and also the simple steps which can be taken to minimise this risk, you should be able to relax and enjoy your flight without worry.

What is it?

Economy Class Syndrome (ECS) is the term commonly used for a medical condition know as Deep Vein Thombosis (DVT). ECS is caused by inactivity and cramped spaces such as those encountered during  airline travel. While flying, the ability of blood to thicken increases hour by hour and blood flow slows down, especially in the lower legs. This combination may cause a blood clot to occur. As the blood clot grows, it may shed small pieces which can travel through large veins, but may get trapped in smaller ones and block blood flow.

This condition is especially serious if pieces get caught in the heart or lungs, where it can  cause injury and, in some cases, death. It is believed that ECS affects thousands of travellers and kills about 100 people each year. It has become so serious, in fact, that many major airlines have begun to distribute warning leaflets and show in-flight videos regarding ECS. Despite it’s name, Economy Class Syndrome is not confined to the "back of the plane" — it can occur in Business Class, First Class, and even the Cockpit

Who’s at risk, and what precautions can be taken?

The main people at risk are those with a history of obesity, heart disease, recent trauma or surgery, pregnancy, hormone therapy/birth control, previous DVT, and varicose veins. Dehydration and even constrictive clothing can also play a part. However, there are some ways to greatly reduce the risk of ECS. Travel Safe Legserciser These include drinking plenty of fluids while avoiding alcohol, stretching several times during each flight,  wearing graduated compression hosiery during air travel, seeking medical advice for pre-existing risk factors before flying and exercising your calf muscles by flexing your feet.

What is graduated compression hosiery and what does it do?

ResTED, Travel Socks

Compression Hosiery is socks, tights or stockings which gently squeeze the wearers legs. The greatest compression is at the ankle, gradually decreasing as it goes up the leg. This graduated compression prevents leg swelling by countering pressures inside the leg and by promoting blood flow back to the heart rather than allowing it to pool in the legs. Not only will the Compression Hosiery lower your risk of Economy Class Syndrome, but it will also reduce ankle swelling, general leg fatigue, and leg discomfort.
